Im prolly being a "bit" ridiculous, but Im getting genuinely frightened by the dwindling stocks of honduran mahog around these parts. {even though I found a beautiful (at least14")x1'x6' nicely quilted piece yesterday, perfect for resawing some nice backs and sides, @425CDN yikes!!! a bit rich for my blood} I know that two major luthiers are constantly high grading hondo stocks that run through certain avenues here in BC, because one of them told me so. Im actually thinking of shifting from buying needed tools to buying hondo for a couple months so that I have an assured and decent supply of necks for a good number of guitars when Im ready to go. I know its very sad with many people already passing off non honduran as honduran mahogany, PS that should have read "I found a beautiful (at least14")x >>>1"<<<< x6' God could you imagine that board 14"X1'x6'  now thats a nice board!

Charlie, I recently saw a board that was 14" wide x 4" thick x 18 FEET long. The grain was oriented perfectly over most of it for cutting either necks or backs and sides. I would have bought it on the spot except then I'd have to build a house out of it(cuz I'd be outdoors if ya know what I mean) so I am saving my pennies although the chances are slim that it will still be available. |

When they built the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, right down on the river silt, they pulled out the oud wooden piles before sinking the new concrete ones. the wooden piles were 3 foot square X 10 YARD long mahogany blocks that had arrived in the 1700s as ship ballast..... 300 years in damp fine silt did them no harm at all and they were virtually undecayed as they were pulled out & loaded onto lorries to be taken away to some lucky investor........ Man I wish I knew where they went, cos 15 years on they're bound to be ready for neck wood!!! |
